Does my dog need to wear sunscreen?
The sun is out and so are you! You and your pup are heading to the park more and spending more time exposed to those pesky UV rays. If you’re putting on sunscreen maybe you’ve wondered if your dog should be wearing sunscreen too?
The answer is yes.
Just like us, our best friends can get sunburnt! Especially hairless dogs like Chinese Crested or American Hairless Terriers and dogs with white or thin coats like Dalmations or Italian Greyhounds. If your dog loves lying in the sunshine then they need protection too! Sunburn is not only painful but it can lead to more serious problems in your pet.
Don’t use your regular sunscreen on your dog!
Find a sunscreen that is for dogs. If you can’t find one then use one that’s safe for human babies or sensitive skin. It’s important that there is no Zinc Oxide in the ingredients as it is toxic to dogs. Make sure you test a small area first to see if your dog has a reaction.
Always offer shade and fresh water for your pup! Take an umbrella with you! There is also light dog clothing which offers protection from the sun! Plus if your dog gets hot fast, there are cooling vests available.
